Additional ITS Capabilities to Consider

With the increase in the number of ITS-specific requirements in transit and traffic projects over the past 10 to 15 years, there has also been an increase in peripheral ITS features included in RFPs.

These can include features like the ability to report estimated time of arrival based on current traffic conditions, or to automatically alert designated personnel when specific safety violations occur, but there are many more available capabilities.

With that in mind, here’s an abbreviated shortlist of ITS capabilities worth considering for upcoming projects. All of these features utilize existing EMTRAC vehicle and wayside equipment:

Lighted Bus-Stop Pylons

Equipped vehicles automatically illuminate bus-station markers and pylons, so they pulse when buses are approaching and remain solid when the bus is at the stop.

Traffic Cabinet Monitoring

Access environmental information from your traffic cabinets, as well as the operating status for cabinet equipment with the EMTRAC Field Monitoring Unit (FMU). The FMU may also handle full Transit Signal Priority.

Gate Control

Vehicle Interrogation

Automatically download activity logs from EMTRAC-equipped vehicles—and upload firmware and database updates. This is typically performed during vehicle downtime at transit garages or rail yards.

Rail Worker Safety

Notify rail workers when trains are approaching their location. Workers carry an EMTRAC Personal Notification Unit, which detects approaching trains and then alerts them via ultra-bright flash, high-volume beep, and/or vibration.

Driver Alerts

Vehicle operators may be kept apprised of system activity with the onboard Control Head, which can notify them of headway status, estimated arrival at upcoming stops, as well as safety alerts such as when the vehicle has exceeded speed limits.
