EMTRAC Wayside-Worker Notification System
As the number of rail lines through metro areas increase, so does the potential for pedestrian accidents—and wayside workers are often in the most vulnerable locations for these types of accidents.
By utilizing precise GPS and secure frequency-hopping spread spectrum radio, the EMTRAC Personal Notification Unit (PNU) alerts transit and traffic workers when an approaching vehicle is within a specified distance. When the train reaches this specified distance, the PNU flashes an ultra-bright LED, sounds a pulsed alarm, and/or vibrates to alert the worker of the approach.
EMTRAC System Features
- Configurable PNU settings enable administrators to set the amount of time or distance that workers are notified of approaching vehicles.
- Ultra-bright LED and high-volume speaker ensures that workers notice vehicle alerts. Detailed logs and reports may be generated and automatically emailed to show activity and alert histories.
- Optional vehicle equipment includes an onboard monitor that displays vehicle and worker positions on maps in real time and a Control Head Unit that alerts driver of workers present.
- Manually-activated panic button enables workers to alert co-workers of potentially dangerous situations.
- PNU is capable of storing up to 10,000 detailed activity logs.
- PNU may be worn in safety-vest pocket or on belt (with clip).
- PNU contains a 12-hour rechargeable battery, which is capable of sounding alerts when battery charge is low.
- Wayside equipment supports 100Base-T Ethernet (or serial RS-232) network communication.

The EMTRAC Components
- Personal Notification Unit (PNU): Enclosed in a rugged case, the PNU uses precision GPS and secure FHSS radio to transmit real-time locations while storing detailed activity and alert logs.
- Vehicle Computer Unit (VCU): Onboard unit tracks real-time vehicle location, transmits approaching-vehicle alerts, and stores activity logs. The VCU may also transmit TSP and EVP requests, in addition to other functions.
- Wayside Detector: Network-connected dual-card unit, installed in wayside cabinets, forwards real-time vehicle and worker activity to central locations running the EMTRAC Central Monitor software.
- Central Monitor Software: Installed on server and workstations at central locations to display real-time vehicle and worker locations, retrieve activity logs, program updates, and configure system settings.
- PNU Interrogator (optional): Network-connected unit installed at charging stations automatically downloads activity logs and uploads firmware or database updates.
