Light Rail Vehicle - Positive Train Control Graphic

EMTRAC Light Rail - Positive Train Control (PTC)

The EMTRAC PTC system combines precise positioning technology and secure RF communication to incorporate Positive Train Control on transit rail lines. The EMTRAC system includes over-speed protection, collision avoidance, and track/signal response confirmation—while also offering the ability to accurately monitor train locations on a map display in real time.

The EMTRAC system requires no costly circuits to install or maintain, and it accurately reports train positions in adverse weather conditions, urban-canyon environments, and subway tunnels.

Benefits of EMTRAC PTC

  • Flexibility: Speed and distance thresholds are easily configured and implemented to allow for special events or temporary speed restrictions. Thresholds may include maximum authorized speeds, minimum allowed distance from other trains (as determined by speed or braking algorithms), and switch confirmation.
  • Precision: Determine which tracks a particular train is on with position accuracy of +/- 24-inches.
  • Timeliness: Improve schedule adherence by enabling designated vehicles to request priority through signalized intersections, based on any number of factors (such as time-of-day, amount of time behind schedule, passenger load, and so on).
  • Low Maintenance: Interface with existing switches and circuits without requiring costly installations.
  • Efficiency: Interfaces with EMTRAC Central Monitor system to enable transit personnel track vehicle progress and activity.

Features of EMTRAC PTC

  • EMTRAC software displays graphical locations in map view, aerial photo view, or native EMTRAC view. It also enables the user to automatically locate specific trains and rail blocks with the click of a mouse.
  • Generate detailed status and activity logs, save them as reports, and export them as spreadsheet files.
  • Trains are equipped with monitors to visually and audibly alert operators of exceeded safety thresholds.
  • Interface with EMTRAC pedestrian sensors to help avoid potentially unsafe scenarios.
  • EMTRAC Vehicle Computer Units can be set up to perform periodic diagnostic checks to ensure proper performance.
  • Trains are equipped with a minimum two-hour battery backup for continued use during outages.
  • EMTRAC software enables monitoring personnel to record and save train activity for later review of key events.
